There are demographic differences between Arizona and the United States as well as demographic changes during the past decade. In 2000, women outnumbered men in Arizona, but only slightly. The 2000 sex distribution for Arizona, its 15 counties, and communities is presented in Table 2a and Table 2b. Fewer Arizonans were aged 45-54 than the national average, but slightly more were elderly (Figure 1). Thirteen percent of the population were 65 years or older. In the last decade in Arizona, the 25-34 year old age group declined at nearly the same rate as the 45-54 age group increased (2.8% vs. 2.7%), to 14.5% and 12.2%, respectively (Figure 2). Table 3a and Table 3b describe the age distribution for Arizona, its 15 counties, and communities in 2000.
